Re: Cannibalising the turrets

Modernizing B-52 bombers is more economical than BBs because of the greater inherant capabilities of the bomber. It should also be noted that while the original B-52 design was made around 1950, The...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

You are talking about building a very big ship, perhaps as big as 40,000 + tons, to support two turrets, 50,000 + tons for all three from one Iowa BB. I think a monitor type hull is out of the...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

Why would there be a requirement for a 16-inch gun? You might have requirements for volumes of fire and defeating certain target sets, but those requirements lead to the caliber, not the other way...

Quote:Why would there be a requirement for a 16-inch gun? This was intended as a hypothetical question in which the assumption that a requirement has emerged for naval 16" guns is taken as a given. It...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

Removing gun turrets from a BB is fairly strait forward, you don't need to cut the hull open at all. The turrets can be dismantled and lifted out piece by piece,- the same way they were put in....

I suspect seasick was referring to the traversing gear, barbettes, and ammunition handling equipment when he said that, viewing the turret as a complete system rather than a discrete part. No matter...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

You would not need even 30,000 tons for two turrets. Friedman’s US Amphibious Ships has among other things a sketch and details of a real 1967 study for building a monitor around 1 16in triple turret...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

The proposal you mention did not include the Iowa's turret armor. And it was only 1 turret. That is why they got it on such low tonnage. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."...

Re: Cannibalising the turrets

No one said anything about reusing the turret armor. That would be utterly pointless unless the ship also got a heavy armored deck, and a heavy belt, and since all that armor is pretty pointless to...

There are pleanty of missiles out there that are far more powerful than the Styx that can be used against the Iowa: The P270 Moskit "Mosquito" (SS-N-22 Sunburn) makes the Styx look like a firecracker....

I mention Styx because it and the Chinese version Silkworm are far more common then the advanced Moskit. The Russians have moved past P-270 anyway, the replacement now on the market is P-800 Oniks, a...

Well keep in mind this ship also had 2 x 127-mm/54 and one 175-mm/60cal guns as secondary armament. The 175mm turn into the 8in and was then canceled, and the modern 127-mm/62cal gun doesn’t weigh...
